The Capability Gap Test™

Every marketing team, hire, or agency relationship performs some mix of six distinct capabilities. Trouble is rarely caused by how many capabilities a company combines into one role — it is caused by which capability has quietly stopped happening while a job title implied it was still covered. The Capability Gap Test™ names the six functions, tests which are actually being performed by someone with clear ownership, and diagnoses the specific gap so a founder hires for the missing capability rather than adding another generalist.

The Problem

A founder benchmarks a category leader, copies its marketing, hires a combined-title generalist, and gets disappointing results. The instinct is to blame the hire. The real failure is that no one identified which capability was being traded away when the roles were combined.

The Framework

  1. 01

    Strategy

What the brand means, who it is for, and why it wins — the upstream diagnosis every downstream decision depends on.

  2. 02

    Direction

The creative vision and quality bar that every deliverable must meet, campaign to campaign.

  3. 03

    Production

Turning approved concepts into scheduled, budgeted, delivered assets on time and on brief.

  4. 04

    Capture

The technical craft of making the actual image or footage — photography and videography.

  5. 05

    Distribution

Getting the work in front of the right audience and owning the relationship — social, PR, influencer.

  6. 06

    Execution

The hands-on making — content creation, copy, and design — increasingly AI-assisted at the volume layer.

In Practice

We run a company's current team and open roles through the six capabilities, identify the one that is most urgently unstaffed, and recommend the right hiring model — internal, fractional, or agency — before any combined-title job description is written.
